Councillor Isobel Day
Alliance Party
Electoral Area: Kilroot
After two years working in the laboratory at the Royal Victoria Hospital, she joined the Royal Air Force, where she met her future husband, Eric. Leaving the RAF on marriage, Isobel moved to London with Eric, in 1975, where he had joined the Metropolitan Police.
Having re-trained in secretarial work, Isobel worked for several large companies before deciding to pursue a career in Personnel Management – gaining a qualification from Thames Valley University – and her last job in London was as International Assignments Manager with Guinness Brewing Worldwide located at Park Royal.
Returning to Carrickfergus in 1998, Isobel was able to carry on her activities with many of the organizations she had been involved with in London. She is treasurer of the Carrickfergus Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, secretary of Whitehead Royal British Legion and a member of the Committee for Carrickfergus Musical Festival Association, and also renewed her association with the Alliance Party. Isobel has successfully completed an Arts degree with the Open University, and for the year 2009 is the Ladies Captain at Whitehead Golf Club. Recently she has become involved with a new local charity called 1 in 3 Cancer Support, a group which offers help and support to cancer patients and their friends and relatives.
Isobel and Eric now live, with their two German Shepherd dogs, in what has been the Hagan (Isobel’s mother’s maiden name) family home for over two centuries, at Blackhead.
Since being elected to Carrickfergus Borough Council in 2005 Isobel has been extremely busy, sitting on at least ten sub-committees including Tourism & Marketing, Arts & Events, Waste Management, Good Relations, Parks, Countryside & Amenities, Leisure & Sports Development, Finance Monitoring, and she is currently the Chairman of Carrickfergus Road Safety Committee. She has also become involved in Whitehead with both the Community Association and the Community Police Liaison Committee.
