Gender

Presentation from Newtownabbey Borough CouncilGender Action Planning

The Council has, with guidance from the Local Government Staff Commission and the Equality Commission, adopted a Gender Action Plan in order to address gender inequalities in the workplace and further. The aspiration behind the adoptrion of the Plan is manifold: to help address the underrepresentation of women in non-tradiitonal roles, to identify opportunites for both men and woment to embark in training initiatives which would allow them to develop new skills which may have been limited to them previously, to develop opportunities to avail of work-life balance policies.

To date, the Gender Working Group, which has responsibility for progressing the Actions contained in the Gender Action Plan have been involved with several projects of note. In November 2007, the Group invited representatives from the local post primary schools to attend a morning to highlight the participation of women in politics, an initiative at which a selection of local women Councillor gave their own perspectives. To build on this work and gain an insight into work being undertaken by other bodies, the Group invited representatives from Newtownabbey Borough Council (pictured with members of the Group) to share their experiences of promoting women within the workplace.

It is intended that actions to promote Gender initiatives will continue, with information on progress being regularly posted on the website.
