Environmental Youth Speak 2012
Carrickfergus Borough Council held Local Heats for the Environmental Youth Speak with competitors from the following schools:
Junior Section - Whitehead Primary School, Victoria Primary School and Sunnylands Primary School
Senior Section - Carrickfergus Grammar School, Ulidia Integrated College and Carrickfergus College.
The winners of the Local Heats were:
McKenzi Purdy of Victoria Primary School (Junior Section) and Lana Douglas of Carrickfergus Grammar School (Senior Section), they are pictured here with Mrs Jean Stewart, Cleansing Operations Officer and Pete Snodden, Guest Presenter
The two entry categories were:
Junior Section (for P6 & P7 pupils) - Shrink Your Bin ...... One Less Bag to Landfill
Senior Section (for Yr 8 & Yr 9 pupils) - WEEE* Waste, Big Problem - What Can We Do?

This competition encourages environmental awareness among young people by giving them the opportunity to research and debate environmental issues. Participation in Environmental Youth Speak enables pupils to improve their communication skills, develop self confidence and articulate reasoned arguments based on environmental facts.
In line with the National Curriculum, Councils are committed to encouraging the development of young citizens and building awareness of environmental sustainability.
