Three larger than life size pairs of military boots cast in bronze by the internationally renowned sculptor John Sherlock have been placed in Carrickfergus and Whitehead as striking Armistice memorials.

The first of the unusual sculptures has been placed at the newly refurbished Whitehead cenotaph with the others installed at the Marine Gardens and at Prospect Gate in Carrickfergus.

Sherlock created the pieces using authentic military boots as his template. Moulds were made of each pair; these were then enlarged to one and a half times life size, then individually sculpted by Sherlock. When every detail had been replicated, the moulds were used to strike the final bronze sculptures.

Carrickfergus Mayor Alderman Jim McClurg welcomed the additions to Carrickfergus Borough's public art collection, saying, "These pieces - admirable and fascinating in themselves - have been created for the Borough's Remembrance Areas to prompt reflective thought in those who visit. Certainly they are a touching and poignant reminder of the many who died, leaving, as we say, 'boots that can never be filled'."
