Images of Ireland Exhibition to Launch in Carrickfergus
25 July 2011
Carrickfergus Borough Council and Mid Antrim Museums Service are pleased to announce the launch of the exhibition, Images of Ireland: the Politics of Identity, 1867-1916, which will open in The Temporary Gallery, Carrickfergus Museum & Civic Centre on 8th August 2011 at 1.30pm.
This touring exhibition explores an important period of history and cultural debate in Ireland during the late 19th and early 20th century. It draws on specific case studies and diverse collections from local museum across the north east region in order to illustrate the complexity of identity at this time.
Images of Ireland was developed as part of the PEACE III Cultural Fusions programme which throughout 2010-11 delivered an exciting programme of exhibitions, workshops and events aimed at promoting a greater understanding and awareness of the rich cultural diversity of the north east.
The overarching theme explored in the Images of Ireland exhibition is ‘identity’ and how ideas of Irish, British, Gaelic and Orange identity evolved during the period commonly referred to as the ‘Celtic Revival’ which occurred over a century ago. In north east Ireland, this search for identity involved exploring areas such as history, archaeology, art and music in the past and present, with a view to shaping identity in the future. Images of Ireland illustrates that many of the issues which engaged people at that time still have strong relevance for communities across the north east today.
The exhibition will open with a launch on August 8th 2011 at 1.30pm in The Temporary Gallery, Carrickfergus Museum & Civic Centre. Members of the general public are very welcome to attend this launch however it is necessary to RSVP to stacey.ferguson@carrickfergus.org or by calling 028 9336 6666.
