    The winners of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s Queen’s 90th Birthday Competition have been revealed.

  • Carnfunnock dogs begging for waggiest tail accolade

    ​May is National Pets’ Month and canines from across the whole Borough – and beyond – are being urged to trot along to Carnfunnock Country Park and take part in fun obedience courses or enter a novelty dog show – or even go for the ultimate title – the waggiest tail.

    Supported by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Latharna Canine and Dog Training Club is staging its own version of ‘Crufts’ – The Carnfunnock Super Dog Show on Saturday 7 May, from 2pm-5pm.

    The Mayor, Councillor Billy Ashe – himself an avid dog owner, pictured here out ‘walkies’ with his own pet, Ty – has urged as many people to get involved as possible.

  • Mayor welcomes Ballee Jobmatch ‘Taster Day’

    The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Councillor Billy Ashe has welcomed an innovative training and employment programme to Ballymena.

    Speaking at Ballee Community Centre, Cllr Ashe, explained that the employability programme is very relevant in addressing work and training-related matters with a focus on running a ‘Taster day’ to let people know what is on offer in terms of employment and training opportunities.   • Family fun day is ‘knit’ all it seems as Borough backs innovative ‘Woollen Wood’ project

    The only ‘Woollen Wood’ anywhere in Northern Ireland will be unveiled soon with a grand opening marked by a free family fun day.

    Running from 1pm – 4pm, it is scheduled to take place on Saturday 7 May with Mid and East Antrim Borough Mayor, Councillor Billy Ashe, noting that Diamond Jubilee Wood, Whitehead will be transformed into a ‘woollen wonderland’ featuring hundreds of woodland-themed artworks made from wool, which have been created by schools, community groups, craft groups and individuals all over Northern Ireland.

  • Mayor congratulates 90-year-old Glenys as she ‘shares birthday’ with Queen Elizabeth

    ​The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Councillor Billy Ashe, was last week leading a variety of celebrations for Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday – one of which had a particularly local significance.

    Glenys Holtom, from Carrickfergus also celebrated her 90th birthday and Cllr Ashe was on hand to add his congratulations.

  • Borough ready to celebrate the Dawn Chorus ‘daily miracle’

    International Dawn Chorus Day is the worldwide celebration of ‘nature’s daily miracle’ – bird song. This year, International Dawn Chorus Day is Sunday 1 May and Mid and East Antrim Borough is hosting three specially organised walks so everyone can join in the dawn chorus experience.

    Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Councillor Billy Ashe, said that spring is an excellent time to experience the world’s oldest wakeup call and dusk chorus and explained that the Borough has two ‘danders’ at dawn and an evening bird song walk to choose from.   • Crowds flock to Carrickfergus as Borough joins national celebrations for Queen’s 90th birthday

    The culmination of a series of events was held last night by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to celebrate a very special royal event – Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday.

    Councillor Billy Ashe, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, pictured, was joined by the Vice Lord Lieutenant for Country Antrim, Richard Reade DL and Pam Reade to light a celebratory beacon at Fisherman’s Quay, Carrickfergus as a link in a nationwide chain of beacons led by Her Majesty lighting the first one that same evening.

  • Lexington Commission visitors received in Mid and East Antrim Borough

    Ongoing work to attract inward investment to Mid and East Antrim has continued with the Lexington Sister Cities Commission being welcomed to the Mayor’s Parlour in Larne.

    Councillor Billy Ashe, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough (pictured here with the delegation this morning) recalled his meetings last month in both Lexington and Danville and said these were held in conjunction with Washington business meetings.

  • Free bagged compost offer set to boost recycling efforts

    Mid and East Antrim Borough Mayor, Councillor Billy Ashe is playing his part in encouraging more people to realise the benefits of composting – and not only for gardeners themselves - but also for the whole community.

    Next month, 1-7 May 2016 is International Compost Awareness Week and Cllr. Ashe is urging everyone to take advantage of the Borough’s free compost giveaway. He is pictured collecting his free compost with Elaine Smith, Environmental Services Manager Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

  • Council Calls on citizens to ‘Get Greening for Health and Happiness’

    Gardening as an opportunity for exercise that will reduce stress and lessen social isolation has this week been hailed as an excellent way of enjoying better physical and mental health.

    Already, green-fingered gardeners have been out in force to celebrate National Gardening Week (11-17 April 2016) as well as a part of this year’s Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom campaign.

    In Mid and East Antrim Borough volunteers have been busy carrying out essential tree maintenance in the community orchard at Diamond Jubilee Wood, Whitehead and carrying out a ‘Big Spring Clean’ at Carrickfergus Mill Ponds.
