WORK STARTING ON £2.5 MILLION CARRICKFERGUS TOWN CENTRE PUBLIC REALM SCHEME

10 January 2012

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has visited Carrickfergus to see the plans for the new £2.5 million public realm scheme.

The scheme was designed in partnership with the Department for Regional Development and Carrickfergus Borough Council.  The appointed contractors FP McCann Ltd are due to begin work later this month.

Nelson McCausland said: “The work about to commence in Carrickfergus town centre will provide a vibrant and uplifting contrast to the existing poor quality and deteriorating surfaces of the paths and public spaces, which were clearly evident during my visit.

“The aim of this new scheme is to create a distinctive “people friendly” environment using high quality stone surfaces, improved street lighting and co-ordinated street furniture, attracting more visitors and shoppers to come to the town.

“ I welcome the appointment of contractors for the scheme and look forward to coming back to Carrickfergus and seeing the work completed later this year.”

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said:“This partnership scheme will  provide an improved pedestrian environment with enhanced links between the town centre and the castle.”

Mayor of Carrickfergus Borough Council Alderman Jim McClurg welcomed the appointment of the contractors and said: ”I am delighted that FP McCann has been appointed contractor and that work is finally starting to improve the streetscape of Carrickfergus.  The scheme will bring a significant uplift to the traditional town centre allowing greater access for pedestrians and a much more aesthetically-pleasing environment for businesses, visitors and shoppers.  I also look forward to watching the scheme unfold and to seeing the fruition of everyone’s efforts later in the year when we will have a dramatically improved traditional town centre to be proud of once more.”

The total funding package of £2.5m for the scheme is being met by DSD, DRD Roads Service and Carrickfergus Borough Council.  The DSD contribution is up to the value of £1,922,987. DRD has contributed £300,000.
