Council Sets Rate for 2010 / 11 - Domestic Rates to Rise by 2.77%
Carrickfergus Borough Council met on Thursday 11th February 2010 to agree its budget for 2010/11 and to strike a rate for the local authority.
The Council meeting had been preceded by a lengthy review of its finances over the autumn by Council officials and from 20 January by the Council’s Estimates Sub Committee attended by the senior management.
The budget that the Council has agreed is set against a backdrop of falling income from services and concern for our ratepayers in light of the economic recession.
Over the past few years the Council has followed a policy of investing in a number of key facilities such as the refurbished Leisure Centre, Town Hall, Marina and promenade. Following a revision of the Masterplan for the town centre conducted by the Carrickfergus Development Company the Council intends to carry forward a major programme to rejuvenate Marina Gardens. A number of other capital projects will add to the leisure and recreation facilities in the Borough. It is expected these will be initiated in 2010/11 and impact the Council’s expenditure.
The Council has had to balance the current financial situation regionally with the need to minimise the burden on local rate payers and believes the right balance has been achieved. The local domestic rate in the Borough from 1 April 2010 will increase by 5.66%. As the regional element of the domestic rate remains static over the same period this means the overall domestic rate will only rise by an estimated 2.77%.
