The General Register Office is primarily concerned with administering the registration of births, deaths and marriages. The main records held are the statutory registers of births, deaths, marriages, still-births and adoptions. The registers themselves are not open to inspection, but information from them is supplied in the form of certificates.
Paying for a Marriage Certificate
- Personal Applications:
You can pay by cash, cheque(accompanied by a cheque guarantee card), postal order or credit card.
- Postal Applications:
You can pay by cheque or postal order made payable to 'The Registrar General' or by credit card. Please do not send cash.
Certificates for Education, Social Security or Electoral purposes can be produced at a reduced fee. Proof from the Social Security Agency/Education and Library Board or Polling Card must be included with your application.
Registering a Marriage
What is the purpose of registration?
The records provide positive information about individuals, and are used for many legal and administrative purposes - for example, National Insurance, education, transfer of property, employment, obtaining a passport etc. They provide valuable statistics. The Registrar General for Northern Ireland must by law publish an annual report giving these statistics.

Either both or one of the persons involved
What information will I have to give?
- Full names of the married couple (bride's maiden name)
- Date and place of marriage
Please note that a registration cannot easily be changed once completed.
Process
To apply for a Marriage Certificate follow one of the options described below:
- In Person:
By taking your application form to the General Register Office. The office is open Monday to Friday 9.30am - 4.00pm (excluding Public Holidays)
- By Post:
By forwarding the application form and fee to:

Registering a Marriage
A marriage must be registered in person at the Registrar's Office EITHER in the district where the marriage took place OR in the district where the married couple normally live

- Personal Applications:
Ready for collection or posting out within 3 working days
- Postal Applications:
Processed within 8 working days of the application being received
- Telephone Applications: Processed within 8 working days of the application being received
- Priority Applications:
Personal applications are ready within 1 hour, with an addition fee of £10.00. Priority applications received by post or by telephone will be issued by first class mail, on the day of receipt.
