Sailing into History

Carrickfergus Sailing Club (contact number evenings and weekends - 028 9335 1402) has a proud and eventful history which can be traced back as far as 1866, when Carrickfergus Rowing Club was founded by Charles H. Crawford. At that time, it was one of the earliest rowing clubs to be established in Ireland. The Clubhouse, a wooden structure supported on piles, was erected behind the East Pier in 1874.

Carrickfergus Sailing Club was established in 1891, and in 1922 the Rowing and Sailing Clubs amalgamated. The Club, then known as "Carrickfergus Amateur Rowing Club incorporating Carrickfergus Sailing Club", continued to promote rowing, sailing, swimming and tennis.

In 1966, the Club’s Centenary Year, an ambitious project involving the construction of a two storey extension and improvements to the interior layout of the building was completed.   But by 1980, with further development on the East Pier site no longer possible and urgent repairs needed to the front platform, the Club accepted an offer from Carrickfergus Borough Council for a 2.2 acre site on reclaimed ground adjacent to the West Pier. The Members unanimously agreed and construction began in early May. Three years later with the Council’s Yacht Harbour taking shape alongside its new premises the future of the Club and of Carrickfergus as a major boating centre was assured.
